The Dublin Institute of Technology has been developing and offering a medical service to its students since 1991. The medical centre for the Colleges based south of the Liffey, including Kevin Street College of Technology, Aungier Street College and Rathmines College is based at the Aungier St complex. Doctors from the Belgrave Clinic have been involved in offering medical care and developing the service since it's onset. This has been done under the auspices of the Student Service Department of the College. Doctors carry out surgeries in the College medical centre 5 days per week.

Features of Health service

  • For appointments/information, contact or call in to secretary.
  • Routine/emergency appointments free of charge to all fulltime registered DIT students
  • Practice nurse run service, with triage of immediate problems availabe on day of presentation.
  • Referral to appropriate medical care eg College doctor that day, if necessary, or given appointment for nurse/doctor at other appropriate time.
  • Two practice nurses having consultations on a daily basis with one/two doctors' surgeries available daily.
  • Students referer d to Belgrave Clinic by practice nurse if deemed necessary by practice nurse when doctor not available in College
  • Doctors and nurses working closely together to offer students holistic care
  • Educational and health promotion features of the service deemed high priority
  • Sexual Health Clinic for all DIT College students run from this Aungier St Ccntre at least twice per week. Clinic is held with support from the HSE and St James Hospital. Appointments are made via the nurses in the two DIT health centres
  • Travel Vaccinations are given by prior arrangement.
  • Hepatitis B vaccinations to students in designated courses.
  • Confidentality of all student consulations gaureenteed.
  • Excellent medical suite and facilities rennovated in 2004
  • Fully computerised practice availing of up to date IT
  • Close working relationship with other college services eg, councelling service, disability office, students union, chaplaincy etc.
  • Health care staff members of the Irish Student Health Care Assossiatin.
  • Advocasy on behalf of student health issues both within the DIT and nationally

Other Important Issues

  • The health service in the DIT Colleges is for the student population only
  • There are fees for some selected services eg attendence at the sexual health clinc etc.
  • There is no out-of-hours provision in this service. Students are advised to register with a local doctor seperately for this service.
  • The medical service for students is “term” related. Outside term, students may present to Belgrave Clinic where they can make appointments to see the doctors who had being seeing them in the DIT. There is a reduced private fee for DIT students in such cases. Medical card patients will be free under the terms the GMS contract.
  • On qualifing or leaving the DIT, students are wellcome to register as patients at the Belgrave Clinic where they will be cared for by the same of doctors. Medical records can be accessed from the DIT.
