History

Ms Deirdre Kelly, in her definitive local history of the area “Four Roads to Dublin”, informs us that “ in the 1860's, No 3 Charleston Rd was a seminary run by a Mrs Mc Cabe and it was at this school the poet Katherine Tynan spent her first school years”. “ I remember fields over a great portion of Ranelagh District “ recalls Ms Tynan. Unfortunately, there hasn't been any poetry of merit produced at 3 Charleston Rd in recent years and the park at Belgrave Square is one of the few green spaces left for aspiring poets.
The Belgrave Clinic has been based at 3 Charleston Rd since 1990. We had worked with an interesting group of complementary practitioners from the building at the corner of Belgrave Square, 1 Charleston Rd, from 1988 till the move 2 doors down. There has been a presence of counsellors or alternative therapists working from the practice continually since. Dr Brendan Clune moved to the practice in 1988 and has been the principal general practitioner since then. The late Dr Jean McEniff moved her general practice from Rathmines to join us in 1989. Her sudden death in 1997 was a great shock to the people of the locality.
Situated on a busy cross city link road, the practice has drawn from a wide catchment area. It reflects the diverse group of patients living around the location. The College of Commerce in Rathmines approached us in 1991 to offer medical services to students. This has led to an ongoing commitment to the Dublin Institute of Technology, with the development and provision of medical services for students, now from its Aungier St site. The practice has had undergraduate medical education links with the Royal College of Surgeons since 1992. We have provided daily medical care to the high dependency elderly patients who reside at the Meath Community Unit, on the old Meath Hospital site, since 1990. The practice has been a keen participant in the South Inner City Partnership in Primary Care, an initiative with the HSE, since it's inception in 1998.
The practice has continued to expand, employing it's first practice nurse in 1997. It has been fully computerised since 1997 also. There are now 4 doctors, offering a wide range of services, Dr Janet Durkan having arrived in 2000 and Dr Conor Ryan in 2007. Professsor Tom Fahy conducts clinical sessions every week.
