South Inner City Partnership

Introduction
The South-Inner City Partnership (SICP) www.sicp.ie is an initiative between local general practitioners, primary care workers and the health authorities with the aim of providing more and efficient medical services for patients in a primary care setting. It started in 1998 with the closure of the Meath, Adelaide and Harcourt St Hospitals in the inner city area and was designed to go some way to fill the service need arising thereafter.

The structure involves 30 general practices in the broad catchment area of St James Hospital engaging with local health care providers in running projects that enhance the provision of primary care locally. A project manager is appointed to oversee the operation and general practitioners sit on a range of sub-committees advising on the different initiatives. The project is based at the Meath Community Unit, site of the old Meath Hospital.

The Belgrave Clinic is one of the practices involved in the project since its inception. We have been actively involved in supporting the SICP and its ideals. Our patients have benefited from the resources. We feel the structure employed is an innovative and cost efficient way of delivering health care at a local level. We also see it as a novel way of organising general practice locally with the advantage of general practice/primary care having representation at hospital interface level in the form of the project manager

Aims of the SICP

  • To develop co-operation and interlinking between four groups involved in the distribution of primary care – namely gps, other primary care workers, HSE administrators and hospitals (at interface level.)
  • To provide a range of meaningful services available within current structures rather than developing brand new services at one distinct location.
  • To be cost efficient in use of public resources
  • To develop IT initiatives
